Advanced Photoshop Workshop

Monday 1st December at 8.15pm in G/169

Our event this Monday is a second digital workshop explaining image manipulation using Adobe Photoshop, the industry standard editing software. This time topics covered will be slightly more advanced, such as increasing dynamic range (HDR) and advanced retouching. This is aimed at intermediate Photoshop users, or those who attended the beginners’ workshop earlier this term.
Feel free to bring your own photos for working on.

The workshop will take place in G/169 at 20:15 and last approximately one hour. G/169 is the upstairs Goodricke Computer Room, above the YSTV rooms. To find it, go through the door near the fountain/pumping house, up the stairs, and you should find the room on your left. (If you get lost, the porters are always there to help).

Reminder: Philosophy Assignment

The Philosophy Society are still in need of photographs for their next magazine issue. Details are below.

Dialectic – the Philosophy Society’s magazine – is looking for photos for our next issue. The theme is Life & Death, and we’ve got articles on things like evolution, medical ethics, the meaning of death etc.

We’re looking for a cover image, and images to accompany articles. The latter will be grayscale.

We got some great pics from PhotoSoc for the last issue, so I hope some of you will be interested. If you want more info, e-mail me at dialecticsubmissions@googlemail.com.

Off-Camera Lighting Workshop

Monday 24th November in D/056 at 8.15pm

Volleyball by Jon Stammers

This workshop will focus on the techniques used and discussed by Strobist founder David Hobby. Rather than relying on large studio lighting, the Strobist approach relies on small flashguns to provide some or all of the light for a photo. The first workshop will introduce the Strobist “movement” and talk about the gear required for it. After a quick “how-to”, the workshop will become more hands-on for you to try out the techniques. Strobist gear will be available so you do not need to bring anything apart from some enthusiasm and a camera with a standard hot-shoe (we will have demonstration cameras).

It’s recommended that you understand the basics of exposure before coming to the workshop. In other words, you know about ISO, shutter-speed and aperture and how they relate.
