Merry Christmas + Competition

Competition

We hope you’ve all had a great first term this autumn. Now is your chance to enter a photo into our Winter Competition.

The theme is open, but if we have enough entries there may be winners in different categories, such as black and white, portrait and wildlife.

The top entries will be exhibited next term (dependent on getting a location organised), so the winning photographs (and a selection of others) will be enlarged at our expense.

All entries must be submitted by noon on Friday 23rd January (Week 2 in the Spring term). Digital entries may be emailed to photosoc@yusu.org (or submitted with the online form), film entries (prints) can be posted to our pigeon hole (P) in the YUSU Student Centre (ask the receptionist if you can’t find it).

Finally, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

End of Term Mince-pie Social

It’s the end of the term this coming week and to celebrate PhotoSoc is having a mini-social on Monday night. We’ll supply some mince pies and you are invited to come along and meet the committee, have a few drinks and get to know each other.
You’re welcome to bring any camera queries and we’ll try to answer your questions.

*Look for a table with mince pies and people with cameras

Later in the week there will be a mailing about our upcoming competition – stay tuned!

Off-camera flash workshop part 2

Monday 8th December in D/056 at 8.15pm

The second workshop of the Strobist series will follow on from the simple 1- and 2-light techniques demonstrated in the introductory session. Portraiture techniques using 2 large light sources (i.e. flashguns with umbrellas) will be explored as well as experimenting with using gels to introduce some colour and snoots to restrict the flashgun output. This session will be much more hands-on than the last allowing all participants to start playing with light and finding how it can be used and abused.

Focus On: Matt Grum

Our previous Chair Tom Hole has blogged an interview with Matt Grum, one of the university’s best known photographers:

Matt Grum is an emerging photographer with an unusual background. Matt is a PhD student speciailising in computer vision and image analysis at York University, currently making the jump to full time freelance. His portfolio is incredibly popular across photo sharing sites like flickr and he is rapidly gaining a name for himself in the North of England.
