Black and White Photography Q&A With Paul Shields

Monday 2nd February at 19.30 in the Library Photographic Department

For all of the photoSoc film enthusiasts, there will be a Q&A session this Monday in which Paul Shields, the university’s resident expert, will answer your questions on all topics relating to developing and printing film photographs. This is a great opportunity to find out how to get the best prints from your black and white negatives. It’s recommended that you have tried the society’s darkroom before coming as this is not an introduction, but a Q&A session for you to further your knowledge.

Battle of the Bands + Black & White Photography Q&A

Finally, here is a message from Matt Grum about photographing this year’s Battle of the Bands contest:

Battle of the Bands 2009

I am coordinating media coverage of Battle of the Bands this year. There are a number of passes available for photographers to get in and shoot on the night, the following (reasonable) conditions apply:

a) no tripods, shoe-mount flashguns front of venue
b) you must photograph all bands playing that night, no matter how bad they are
c) you must submit a selection of photos within 24 hours

Photographers will retain full ownership of all photos and BOB will have the rights to use the photos to promote future events, provided the photographer is credited. There will be restrictions on using SLRs and SLR style cameras without a pass so if you want to photograph the event get in touch with me!

There are 8 events total in this years competition, in weeks 4 and 6:

Heat 1 Monday Feb 2nd
Heat 2 Tuesday Feb 3rd
Heat 3 Wednesday Feb 4th
Heat 4 Thursday Feb 5th
Heat 5 Friday Feb 6th

Semi 1 Monday Feb 16th
Semi 2 Tuesday Feb 17th

Final Saturday Feb 21st

Photographers need to arrive at 7.30pm.

I have written a helpful guide to gig photography (which is particularly applicable to battle of the Bands), check it out here (there may be a test):
www.mattgrum.com/blog/11-tips-for-better-gig-photography/
So finally if you would like a pass, please email BOB@mattgrum.com stating which nights you can attend.

Matt

PS I am playing in heats 1 and 5 so if you are photographing those nights you had better get some good shots of me.

Competition

Tomorrow is the deadline for entering our competition!

For details of the competion and to submit, please use the website here: http://yorkphotosoc.com/photography-competition/

Our next scheduled event this term is on 2nd February and will be a Q and A session with university photographer Paul Shields, on the topic of Black and White photography. Later in the term will be our annual general meeting where you can join the photoSoc committee and find out a bit more about how we operate.

A message for all our members regarding a workshop over the easter holidays is posted below:

Easter photo workshop

I am writing to inform you of a very successful workshop we have run for the past two years.
The workshop is based in Umbria, Italy and is co-ordinated by experienced tutors, who have both worked for the National Geographic. The four day course, over the Easter period, aims to introduce people to a range of photographic styles in different situations. The range of experiences include photographing the architecture of Assisi, the landscape around the Rocca Maggiore and hilltop towns, and the ‘Processione del Venerdi Santo’ (an Easter procession reacting the Passion of Christ). The cost of the course is 580 euros and includes accommodation and breakfast, welcome aperitiv and dinner, Easter brunch and a medieval feast on the last night.
I was wondering whether any members of the Photographic Society would be interested in this workshop
If you wish further information regarding past or future workshops please visit www.grima.org or contact me directly.
