Off Camera Lighting Equipment Workshop

Off-Camera Lighting Equipment Workshop

Monday 23rd February, 8.30pm in L/036

This term’s lighting workshop will focus on how to set up and use various pieces of lighting equipment. Please bring your own camera – all it needs is a standard hot-shoe. We will have cameras for you to try though.

If you came to the Strobist/lighting workshops last term then this continues in a similar vein, except we’re emphasising equipment more than technique.

There will be a rotation between 3 groups explaining the use of different equipment:

  1. Studio Lighting with the PhotoSoc D-Lite 4 kit. This will teach you how to setup and use a two light softbox setup. Cameras with a hot-shoe can handle this. The D-Lites create a professional looking light and are a real step up from small flashes.
  2. Using the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS). PhotoSoc has 2 Nikon flashes and a D80 camera which work together wirelessly. You’ll be shown how to set up the system for flexible, TTL metering so you don’t have to worry about adjusting flashes as you move them. (This only works with Nikon cameras but we will have one for you to try).
  3. Strobist Lighting in Manual Mode with Flash Guns. We’ll cover the basics of the equipment including triggering methods and a couple of different types of manual flash.

We will be in L/036, near the vending machines in the Langwith nucleus.

If you’re interested in hiring our studio or Nikon lighting gear then this is the workshop for you. As always, if you have any queries email us.

Langwith Exhibition, RAG Photos, Elections

Next week we’ll be running a workshop on using flashes and studio lighting equipment – look out for a newsletter later in the week.

Reminder: Langwith Exhibition

To submit prints, Simon Watkins from the Langwith Arts Committee will be in Langwith Senior Common Room or the Norman Rea Gallery itself on Thursday and Friday week 6, from 10am to 12pm. If those times don’t suit then just email saw511@york.ac.uk

See this post for more details about the exhibition.

Reminder: Submit your RAG Parade Photos

RAG invites us to photograph the RAG Parade so we can give them our best photos for future P&P. If you took any good photos last Saturday please email them to paradephotos@yusu.org ASAP!

Elections: Positions on The Committee

Our elections and AGM will be in Monday Week 9 (time/location to be confirmed) and this post is to give you an idea of the positions that are available. Even if you are not thinking of running for election, please come to our AGM as we need a certain percentage of our members to vote.

3 Signatory Positions: – These must be filled!
CHAIR: Responsible for the day to day running of the society, its direction across the year and the accountability of its members
VICE CHAIR: Responsible for assisting the chair
TREASURER : Responsible for finance, submitting and running the budget

Other Positions:

DARKROOM OFFICER: Responsible for the maintenance of darkroom and tuition of techniques
EQUIPMENT OFFICER: Responsible for the acquisition of equipment and its storage and hire
ORDINARY MEMBERS:  Responsible for helping out the other members
FILM/DIGITAL OFFICERS: Responsible for their respective fields

The members of the current committee who are leaving include: the Chair, Vice Chair, Darkroom Officer, and Ordinary Member. However all positions are up for election. Any member of the society can stand for Election!

If you want to help out in some way which is not covered by the current positions, just ask.

Running events weekly can be a lot of work. But it doesn’t mean you have to continue this in the future. What you can do depends on how many people run for the committee and what you are interested in. I would advise you all to run – firstly, it’s great fun – secondly, it looks good on your C.V. – and thirdly if you are worried about the work-society balance, your work always comes first. You will not be asked to do anything you are not capable of and there will always be other to help.

Remember: No committee members mean no photoSoc!
