Week 4 Newsletter

Hi all,

Thanks everyone who attended our events this week, we really hope you got something out of them, particularly some good photos! If you did, put them on our Flickr account so everyone else can see.

Week 4

This week coming we have the first of the Photoshop tutorials planned. On Thursday (5/11/09) at 7.30 in D/104, our digital officer Joe and communications officer Sam will be giving a demonstration on the very basics of using Adobe Photoshop. If you are very new to, or have never before used Photoshop, then this is the perfect workshop for you! More advanced workshops will be held later in the term.

Outdoor Soc Walk

As we told you in the Welcome Talk in Week 2, we are planning on doing a trial trip with Outdoor Soc for Sunday of Week 4 (08/11/09). The walk will be to Fountains Abbey, which is the largest abbey ruins in the country, set in the beautiful Northern countryside. At the moment for non-members of Outdoor Soc, ticket prices (which covers your travel to Fountains Abbey) are £8. Please email us if you are interested in attending this walk, because the more people that go, the more we can subsidise the tickets from our budget. We will let you know on Monday where and when you can get the tickets from, and how much they will cost, depending on how many of you are interested.

Competition!

We will be holding a competition this term with the theme of ‘Motion’. The deadline will be next Sunday (08/11/09) so start taking photos! Email them to us at photosoc@yusu.org with the email title of Motion Competition. We are planning on having the photos judged independently in Week 5, and a showcase and talk from the winners and any other members wanting to talk about their work in Week 6.

Etcetera Magazine

We were recently contacted about an exciting new project taking off on campus:

“We are establishing a new arts magazine called ‘etcetera’ which will aim to provide a platform for the creativity of all students at the University of York. We hope to include submissions of short prose, poetry, short drama pieces, drawing, photography, painting and design and also to work closely with relevant societies within the university.

I am writing in the hope that the photography society would be interested in cooperating with us. As a society interested in creativity and the arts I expect that you have many members who would be interested in submitting their work for us to publish.

We can be found on various sites; facebook, as the group Etcetera York (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=134435852669&ref=ts), our blog (http://www.etceteratheartsmagazine.blogspot.com/), and our website etcetera-arts: (http://www.etcetera-arts.co.uk/index.html).

Lightroom

Hi Everyone
Adobe announced Lightroom 3 Beta, which improves a lot on the previous versions. Those of you who already use Lightroom, or just heard of it and want to try it out, you can download the Beta for Free from Adobe’s website:

http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/lightroom3/

You need to register with Adobe first, and then you will be able to download the new version 3. Please read the required specifications for the software to run, and also please notice this is a BETA, so it is not the finished product, and the final product maybe different, and may include additional features.
If you are running an older version, this one will not upgrade yours, it will be running separately.

If you need any help with the software, or you cannot download or install it, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sam

Week 3 Newsletter

Hi Everyone,

If you didn’t make it to Thursday’s social then you definitely missed out! Once we have the last disposable camera collected then we will get them printed to disc and upload them on our website or Facebook, we will keep you posted. Thanks Irene for a great night, we are looking forward to the next one!

Events For Week 3

We have a quite a few events this week for you all to attend:

This Monday (26/10/09), our professional university photographer Paul Shields will be giving a talk on camera basics, such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO etc. If these words mean nothing to you then come down! Bring your camera too in case you have any specific questions. Even if you do know about how cameras work then you are still welcome to come along, you may find out something you never knew. The talk will be in the JBM seminar room which is on the ground floor of the library, see you there Monday at 8pm!

On Tuesday (27/10/09) Justyn will be taking people on a walk at night time as part of the Illuminating York week, where colourful art is projected on some of York’s most historic buildings, such as York Minster and St Mary’s Abbey. As well as being a brilliant opportunity to see other people’s artwork, this is a perfect way to create some of your own, check here for some photos in the style you may take:

www.illuminatingyork.org.uk/gallery-illuminating-york.html

www.justynhardcastle.co.uk/gallery_263157.html

We will be meeting at 8pm outside the public entrance of the Minster, for those of you coming from campus then the Number 4 bus at 7.40pm will probably be the best one to get. If you have a tripod, bring it!

On Wednesday (28/10/09), we will be making the most of the historic York architecture by having an afternoon trip to the Minster and then visiting the Museum Gardens to get some nice photos (check our Flickr photopool, there are quite a few examples on there). Meet Sam outside the YUSU office (near old Goodricke, and new James College, and near the Roger Kirk Center). We will be meeting at 1:30pm, then taking the bus to town to get to the Minster. If you prefer to meet us there, then we will be at the Minster around 2:30. Remember to bring your University Card to get free entry to the Minster, and money for the bus.

If you can’t make an event, then there is no need to contact us, just attend whatever interested you and what ever you have the time to make.

Other notices:

For those of you that don’t know, sometimes we have requests from other socieities to help them out with photography-related projects. We have had a request from Tom Weir of the university rugby team;

“I have a project I could do with some photoSoc help on. I want to do some posters for our first 1′s home game against Durham (wed week 3) and have an idea forming already just need someone good with a camera and who can Photoshop us up well. Was thinking could be possibly a good project for a keen fresher if you get any who would be interested? (no payment i’m afraid apart from bacon sandwiches & plenty of exposure round campus) “

As this is this Wednesday, if you are interested then please contact him as soon as possible on tddw500@york.ac.uk.
