Paul Shields Camera Basics Talk

Paul Shields, resident university photographer and bona fide expert in the field, will be doing a talk on Monday at 8pm. It’ll be in the JMB Library’s seminar room, which I believe is just to the right as you go in the automatic doors. This is for you if you’re just getting started with your camera, or you’ve been going for a while, but still think you could do with a good grounding in the basics. This foundation might help your enjoyment of the more advanced workshops we’ll be doing later.

If you haven’t signed up yet and you want to, just come along and have a chat with one of the committee and they’ll sort you out. Or you could come along to any of our other get-togethers and do it then. No deadline!

- Liam

You can still join!

We seem to be getting a lot of e-mails and general enquiries about joining up, when you haven’t come to either our stall at fresher’s fair or our first meeting. All you need to do is turn up and ask to join, we want as many members as possible, and I’m sorry if it was implied at all before that there was some kind of deadline. Details about specific meetings, or socials, or workshops or will be added to this website, our facebook page and they’ll also go out to everyone on the mailing list once everything gets confirmed. So you’ll know when there’s an opportunity to come along and sign up.

- Liam (who hasn’t paid his membership fee yet either, oops)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Next week...

Next week we have a few things planned for you. We have two tripsorganised: The first one will be a walk around the Minster and MuseumGardens at night time, as the 'Illuminating York' week is on,(http://www.visityork.org/seeanddo/whats-on/thedms_illuminating.aspx?dms=13&feature=1027&venue=1504855) .

Tied in with this we will be doing another walk of the Minster, Museum Gardens and maybe the city walls but in the daytime. Both meeting times, dates and times are to be confirmed, but at the moment the night time walk will probably be this Sunday, and the day time walk a week today, next Wednesday.

Our first workshop, which will be taken by Paul Shields, our professional univeristy photographer, will be on camera basics. This will take place next Monday at 8pm in the JBM Seminar room which is on the ground floor of the library.

See you on Thursday!

Welcome to PhotoSoc!

Hi members, welcome to PhotoSoc!

Freshers’ Fair went really well yesterday – we had nearly 250 people sign up for the mailing list!

We will be giving a talk this Tuesday (20/10/2009) at 20:30 in D/056. If you are new and aren’t sure where this room is, there is a campus map there: http://www.york.ac.uk/np/maps/hes.htm . D/056 is a large teaching room next to the rectangular pond in Derwent college, between Derwent Bar and Heslington Hall.

The talk will tell you a little more about what we do as a society, including what you can expect over the next term, what equipment you can hire and books you can borrow. The talk will last about 20 minutes and then we will be taking membership fees (which is £5 for the year.) If you are interested please come along, but there is of course no obligation to join if you do not want to! Also, if you cannot make the talk and want to join please email us at photosoc@yusu.org .

Our first social will be this Thursday (Wk 2), which Irene, our social secretary, will be giving you further details about at the talk on Tuesday.

If you want to get to know other people in the society, feel free to join our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/York-PhotoSoc/52822554753 and if you want to share photos have a look at our Flickr group and add your photos to our pool:

As always all information about the society can be found on our website: http://yorkphotosoc.com

If anyone wants to cover this (but don’t forget this will also be our first social!) then head over there and if you email your photos to band@yusu.org then they will be used on their website and you will be credited.

See you on Tuesday!

photoSoc Vice-Chair

Happy new (academic) year!

A hello to all, returning students or freshers. If you’re thinking of joining up, we’ll be having a stall at Fresher’s Fair this Saturday, so you can see what we’re about. If you were with us last year, then you’ll just be wanting to meet up with us at 8:30 next Tuesday in D/056 (it’s on the south side of Derwent College, we’ll be hanging about with cameras and stuff). You can pay the membership fee at the fair or the first meeting. See you all soon.
