We received this message from Outdoor Soc:
On Sunday, as many of you already know, we are going to Fountains Abbey, near Ripon, a beautiful Cistercian monastery from 1134 which is one of the best preserved abbeys in the country. It is sure to offer some history, culture and stunning architecture, for all of those wishing to see some of the great sites of Yorkshire.
This will be a break from our usual walks, so no boots are necessary. You can even come in jeans if you wish. Just bring a coat in case it rains!
There has also been an amendment to the ticket price. If you are a member of the National Trust or English Heritage, and have a card which you can bring with you on the day to prove this, then the entrance fee is free, and you just need to pay for the coach – £8 for non-members, and £6 for Outdoor Soc members.
If you are not a member of the NT or the EH then we can get a reduced price as a group, for £6 each. So this means that the combined cost of your ticket will be £12 for members, and £14 for non-members, as non-members will be getting a reduction on the entrance fee any way. Sorry about the previous email which may have caused some confusion.
You can go about the abbey in your own groups or on your own, however you like, and you can either bring a packed lunch (which might be cheaper) or money for food when you get there. The cream teas at National Trust properties are usually amazing!!
We will be leaving at 9:50Am, not the usual 8:50 for Outdoor Soc walks, from the usual spot at the white benches, outside the Roger Kirk, near Physics. We will be leaving the abbey at 3PM, which should give us plenty of time to explore the grounds. This means that we will be back to campus at 4PM, as it is no more than an hour away.
In order to get a ticket and book your place on the coach you will need to come to sign ups on Thursday. These are at Vanbrugh stalls, near the porter’s lodge and Vanbrugh cafe, between 12 and 2pm.
