Week 7 Newsletter

Hey Everyone,

This is a bit long, but important so please read it through!

So for Week 7 we are having a Studio Set Workshop by Martin. It will cover basics on using strobes as well as an induction on how to set up the studio lights.

This would be an excellent opportunity for anyone who is interested in hiring out the studio kit but doesn’t know where to begin!

The workshop will be on Thursday 25th at 7.30, in V/123. [Note this is not our usual location, drop us an email if you don't know where it is, and we'll guide you.]

Also, for Week 8 we have quite a few things happening. There is Fusion, and we’ll soon let you know about how those who are interested can cover the event.

There is also an Outdoor Society’s trip to Ripley Castle which we will subsidise.

And most importantly, we have out Annual General Meeting and its also time for electing the new committee :) [Day/time to be confirmed]

Elections: The following positions are open

3 Signatory Positions : These MUST be filled : They are the steering power of the society, and will direct it for the year.

Chair: Responsible for the daily functioning of the society, accountable for its members.

Vice Chair: Responsible for aiding the chair in the overall function of the society.

Treasurer: Responsible for the finance of the society, planning, submitting and running the budget.

Other Positions:

Darkroom Officer: Responsible for the maintenance of darkroom and tuition of techniques

Film/Digital Officer: Responsible for their respective fields

Equipment Officer: Responsible for the acquisition of equipment and its storage and hire

Webmaster: Responsible for running the website, updating it regularly along with the facebook page.

Social Secretary: Responsible for making us all go out every once in a while and have a good time !

Communication Officer: Liaise with other societies, organisations, to organise talks/workshops/events.

Ordinary Member: Responsible for helping out the other members

If you are interested in helping in any other way, and would like to create a position for that, just email us, or turn up for the AGM and ask !

Reasons Why You Should Run For A Position:

1) It’s a great experience and tons of fun !

2) Looks good on your C.V-Build a diverse skill set.

3) You get to help the society grow in a chosen direction, this could be something that you are otherwise interested in but can now take up more seriously if you like!

We’ve been aiming at running weekly events, but this can often be challenging. However, how often events are held in the future is up to the new committee. What the committee and hence the society does, depends on how many people run for the committee and what they are interested in. Don’t stress out about work-society balance, as you will have the opportunity to prioritise your degree! And don’t worry about previous experience, individuals from the current committee and the past committee’s are always available for help, and you wont be pushed to do anything you are not comfortable/capable of. This is honestly a great opportunity for you to get involved in something you are interested in, and along the way meet a lot of new people, make your ideas come alive, and get more involved in this huge portion of university life !

Any member of the society can stand for Election! If you aren’t a member, you can always sign up at the AGM/Elections.

Remember: No committee members means no PhotoSoc!

Even if you are not thinking of running for the election [but you really should] please come to our AGM as we need a certain percentage of our members to vote. So come select your new committee :)

If anybody needs any form of information on the elections/positions, please don’t hesitate to send us an email, and we’ll get back to you asap !

Look forward to seeing you all soon !

Lots of Love,

PhotoSoc.

Local Photography Competition!

Hi everyone, Here is an email we were forwarded:

“My name is Claire and I am the new promoter of Mr Yellow, a well-known street performer in York. We are currently re-branding Mr.Yellow, and are looking for new creative input. As such we are offering a competition to all photograhy students. We are looking for new advertising photographs that capture the true essence of Mr Yellow. We would like to offer your photography students the chance to have their photographs used as the main images for our new advertising campaign. The winners name will be placed on one of our webpages as the photographer of the images with their contact details. They will be free to use this image in their portfolio for future work within the industry. What we propose is that Mr Yellow comes into your college and does a 30 minute talk to your students about who he is – he is an experienced motivational speaker, and also provides talks on building confidence, as well as de-stressing.. Then a couple of days later Mr Yellow will come into the college again and be photographed by each willing student using their own concept. After all prints have beed decided upon, 1 week later Mr Yellow, myself and our web designer will come to the college and choose the winner. The winner’s image may also be used in promo posters and other merchandise. This is an opportunity for your budding photographers to work with real clients in a real-world scenario. I look forward to hearing from you should you be interested. Kind RegardsMs. Claire RogersSales & Marketing ManagerYellow PromotionsYorkYo23 1AL”
