Weekly Update from PhotoSoc

Hey there Photosoc’ers,

Indoor and Outdoor Lighting Workshops – Monday 23^rd May 2011

A strong focus of photography is in use of lighting in all conditions. This
can make or break a spectacular photograph.

We’ll be running indoor and lighting workshops for you to get hands-on
experience with technique and equipment.

This will be start at around 8pm on Monday 23^rd May at D/056 in Derwent
Block.

The Norman Rea Gallery presents ‘How Do You Draw?’ – Tuesday 24th May 2011

The exhibition is primarily aimed at investigating the multi-functionality
of drawing and has invited artists from all fields to take part, offering
viewers an opportunity to look at a rarely explored art form. ‘How do You
Draw?’ will present drawing in many mediums, drawing that is stitched,
modelled, printed and sculpted. The viewer will witness a unique dialogue
between artist and artwork, which will enable a chance to see the varied and
contrasting languages of drawing.

Curated by Kate Gibson

There will be an accompanying lecture, with talks by Nick Chare of the
University of York and Stephen Hunter of the Edinburgh College of Art.

Organised to coincide with the opening of ‘How Do You Draw?’ at The Norman
Rea Gallery, this lectures supports an endeavour to illuminate a highly
secretive art form: The art of Drawing. Dr Nick Chare from the History of
Art Department and visiting speaker Stephen Hunter from Edinburgh College of
Art have varied research backgrounds; thus this lecture promises to be a
highly challenging and thought provoking introduction to an under-explored
medium. After the lecture all are welcome to come to the opening for a glass
of wine and to view The Norman Rea Gallery’s newest exhibition.

Another great work opportunity – this time to get published!

Paul Gething is an archaeology author who has been commissioned to write a
history of Northumbria in the Anglo-Saxon period. He is looking for someone
to take around 10 photographs of a range of things in and around York
relating to the Angles and Northumbria e.g. a few museum shots, a few
outdoor shots and a few artefact shots.

He cannot pay for the work, but it will be credited in the finished book,
published by the History Press, so it will have a good circulation. However,
he can cover reasonable expenses.

Competition – Positive Images of Ageing in York

The ‘Full of Life’ photography competition is being run by a group of
partner organisations that want to get people thinking about ageing in a
more positive way. They want people to send in positive photographic images
of people aged 50+ doing something they love in York, whether working,
playing, volunteering, or socialising with friends and family – the choice
is yours. The older person/people should be the focus of your photo, and
they will hopefully be smiling!

They are also keen to receive photos which show people aged 50+ interacting
with younger people in York – maybe grandparents with grandchildren, or
older people sharing knowledge and expertise with young people, and vice
versa.

This is a York initiative and so they ideally want York residents to be the
focus, in York settings – keep it local!

For more info, visit https://sites.google.com/site/fulloflifeyork/home.
Please see the main menu for details of ‘How to Enter’ and for more info on
the competition and the fantastic prizes on offer see ‘FAQs’. Closing date
for entries is 12pm, Monday 13 June 2011.

Summer Term 2011

Welcome back to York!

PhotoSoc has several events planned for the term ahead, watch this space and sign up for the newsletter if you haven’t already done so.

Changes to equipment hire.

Photosoc,

The way in which equipment is hired from Photosoc has now been altered slightly.

Equipment can now be taken out on a friday afternoon and is to be returned at the same time the next week.

Hopefully this will simplify the process!

Thanks,

Oli

Week 5 Social

This Thursday, we will have our first social of the term and also the first social of the new committee. The plan is to meet in the Courtyard for a few drinks and maybe dinner (food is served until 8pm). Then we will play a game of Assassins on campus. We have a polaroid camera and there will be various challenges and a little prize for the winner. I will give you more details and instructions in the Courtyard but it would be brilliant if you could all dress in black to make the game easier.

Please invite yourselves to the Facebook group so we have an idea about numbers and bring along friends- the more the merrier!

Looking forward to seeing you all there xxx
