Week 3: Disposable Camera Social

It is finally time for our first social of the year!!!

Last year the Disposable Camera social was a big success so we will try and make it even better this year! The plan is as follows:

Get to the courtyard for 8pm and have one or two drinks. We will put you into groups of 4 or five people and give you a disposable camera. You can take photos of whatever you like, as long as it is not boring so no nice group shots, no photos of your best mate smiling, nothing ordinary please!

We will go on a little bar crawl in town, and hopefully by the end of the night you will still be in possession of a camera full of amazing pictures. We will think of a little prize for the group that takes the funniest photos, and of course we will upload them onto this site.

If you think you may come along, click over to our Facebook group (http://tinyurl.com/37zm7ma) and register your interest so we can get an idea on numbers.

To give you an idea of what we are looking for, here is a link of some of last years pictures: http://tinyurl.com/32nfoe8

Nouse photographer request

Nouse are currently looking for photographers to join their team. As well as covering on-campus news stories, events and sports they also go to fashion week and regularly do fashion shoots. So there is something for everyone! Open to a range of abilities, get in contact if you are interested at justyn.hardcastle@nouse.co.uk.

Photographer request and Membership

Thanks to everyone who made it to the workshop yesterday. The room was overflowing and we had loads of you signing up to the upcoming events!

Paul Shields has also promised to give us some old lenses and darkroom equipment that he  has available – he will also be giving another workshop in Week 7 on Lighting.

From time to time, we are asked by other societies and university press for members who would be willing to put their talents to use. For those interested, York Vision is looking for a few willing photographers to come along to sports matches/evens and take photos for the paper. These photos will appear in print, and even if they don’t make it into the paper (which comes out three times a term), they will be featured online. In both cases the photographer’s name will be included. In short, this is a great opportunity for you to get experience as well as publicity. Email their Sports Editor on josh.mangham0@gmail.com if your interested.

Irene will be in the V-Bar tomorrow to sign up any of you who couldn’t make it yesterday.

Week 2: Photography Basics with Paul Shields

Paul Shields, resident university photographer and bona fide expert in the field, will be giving a talk this Wednesday (20th October) at 4pm.

It’ll be in the JB Morrell Library’s seminar room, which I believe is just to the right as you go in the automatic doors. This is for you if you’re just getting started with your camera, or you’ve been going for a while but still think you could do with a good grounding in the basics. This foundation might help your enjoyment of the more advanced workshops we’ll be doing later.

If you haven’t paid for this year’s membership, don’t worry, just come along and have a chat with one of the committee and they’ll sort you out. Or you could come along to any of our other socials and do it then. No deadline!

We look forward to seeing you all then!

Welcome to PhotoSoc

Hello to our new members and welcome to PhotoSoc!

We had a great turnout at the Freshers’ Fair yesterday – with over 250 people sign up for the mailing list!

Paul Shields our official University photographer will be giving a talk this Wednesday (Wk 2). This will cover the basics of photography; setting up your shot by controlling lighting and focus. As well as measuring the choosing the exposure and shutter speed on your film or digital SLR. This should provide handy tips for later trips in the term.

We will also tell you a little more about what we do as a society, including what you can expect over the next term, what equipment you can hire and books you can borrow. If you are interested please come along, but there is of course no obligation to join if you do not want to! This is also the opportunity for people you know who may be interested to sign up.

Our first social will be on Tuesday 26th October (Wk 3), and we will be giving you further details nearer the time. For the moment, below is a brief outline of events for this term.

Week 1: Welcome Back !

Hello to all the returning students out there! We hope you had a great relaxing summer and welcome back to York. If you’re thinking of joining up this year, we will be at the Fresher’s Fair on Saturday (Exhibition Centre, Stand 41) so you can see what we’re about, and renew your membership if necessary.

The website is in the process of being revamped. Among the new features is the ability to register and login to the site (and newsletter) simply using your Facebook login. If you haven’t yet registered then simply load up the website and click the Register box in the top corner.

We have an exciting term ahead of us and details of events will be sent out later this weekend.
