Black and White Photography Q&A With Paul Shields

Monday 2nd February at 19.30 in the Library Photographic Department

For all of the photoSoc film enthusiasts, there will be a Q&A session this Monday in which Paul Shields, the university’s resident expert, will answer your questions on all topics relating to developing and printing film photographs. This is a great opportunity to find out how to get the best prints from your black and white negatives. It’s recommended that you have tried the society’s darkroom before coming as this is not an introduction, but a Q&A session for you to further your knowledge.

This workshop will focus on the techniques used and discussed by Strobist founder David Hobby. Rather than relying on large studio lighting, the Strobist approach relies on small flashguns to provide some or all of the light for a photo. The first workshop will introduce the Strobist “movement” and talk about the gear required for it. After a quick “how-to”, the workshop will become more hands-on for you to try out the techniques. Strobist gear will be available so you do not need to bring anything apart from some enthusiasm and a camera with a standard hot-shoe (we will have demonstration cameras).

It’s recommended that you understand the basics of exposure before coming to the workshop. In other words, you know about ISO, shutter-speed and aperture and how they relate.
